Botswana kicked off the annual Month of Science with a launch ceremony held at Wagga Gardens in Gaborone this morning. The month of Science aims to emphasize the crucial role of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) in Botswana and how it can substantially positively impact the country's economy in the long run.
New Era College is committed to nurturing future innovators and is proud to be a partner in the month of Science through the hosting of our annual STEM hackathon in partnership with the Mathematics Association of Botswana from the 15th to the 17th of August. During today's launch event, the College came to showcase their STEM kits which are designed to engage learners in interactive and hands-on activities, encouraging them to explore their curiosity in electronics, programming and robotics.
The college further showcased their innovations, such as the SMART Water tank and SMART Greenhouse system. The SMART Water tank utilizes sensors and automation to ensure efficient water management in agriculture, contributing to sustainable farming practices in Botswana. Similarly, the SMART Greenhouse system optimizes plant growth through controlled environmental conditions, maximizing agricultural yields while minimizing resource consumption.
Speaking at the event, Honorable Phenyo Segokgo, the Minister of Communication, Knowledge and technology, emphasized that such initiatives are crucial for the socio-economic development of Botswana as they create a new generation of skilled individuals capable of driving technological advancements and contributing to the country's progress.
Honorable Douglas Letsholathebe, the Minister of Education, echoed these sentiments, he stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between educational institutions and the government to provide students with a well-rounded STEAM education that aligns with the needs of the country's evolving industries.
New Era College aims to use the National hackathon as a platform for learners to showcase their creative ideas and problem-solving capabilities. By honing their skills in electronics, programming, and robotics, students will not only be prepared for the challenges of the future but will also have the opportunity to contribute actively to Botswana's technological progress.
